Family Islands, Cassowary Coast · 4km from Mission Beach
Dunk Island (Coonanglebah) sits just 4km offshore from Mission Beach, making it one of the most accessible island day trips in North Queensland. The island was made famous as a tropical retreat by writer E.J. Banfield in the early 1900s and later became home to the iconic Dunk Island Resort. Today the island is largely natural and undeveloped, with walking trails through rainforest, beautiful fringing reef for snorkelling, and several pristine beaches.
Mission Beach Adventures runs scheduled transfers to Dunk Island departing from Clump Point Jetty. Return transfers take approximately 20 minutes each way. Guests can spend the day exploring at their own pace or join one of our guided island tours. The short crossing makes it easy to tailor your day — arrive early to beat the heat, explore at leisure, and head back in time for dinner.
The island is home to large numbers of Ulysses butterflies, Torres Strait pigeons, and is one of the best places on the Cassowary Coast to spot wildlife. The fringing reef offers excellent snorkelling directly from the beach, with coral gardens, reef fish, and the chance of turtle sightings in the shallows. Walking trails wind through the island's interior rainforest, where the diversity of birdlife and vegetation reflects the island's Wet Tropics heritage.
