The Migration

Every year from approximately June to October, humpback whales migrate along the Queensland coast, passing directly through the waters off Mission Beach. These enormous animals — reaching up to 16 metres in length — travel between their Antarctic feeding grounds and their calving areas in warmer northern waters. Mission Beach sits along the primary migration corridor, and our proximity to deep water means whales often pass very close to shore.

What You Might See

Sightings from our vessels during this period are common and remarkable. Breaching, tail slapping, and mothers with calves are all regularly observed. On a good day, a single pod can keep you watching for 20–30 minutes as they surface, blow, and move through the passage between Mission Beach and the Family Islands.

Which Tours to Book

While we don't run dedicated whale watching tours, guests on reef trips, island tours, and sunset cruises during whale season frequently encounter humpbacks en route. If whale season is important to your trip planning, we recommend booking any tour between July and September for the highest likelihood of a sighting. The reef trip offers the longest time on the water and the best odds — but any departure during peak season is a real opportunity.
